        Abstract
The ability to identify significant, relevant and trustworthy research is integral to effective evidence-based practice. This is the second in a short series of articles by the research reviews team that aim to help readers get the most out of research. In this paper, the focus is on: defining critical appraisal; explaining key terms and concepts, including why appraisal is necessary; and the different approaches that we may need to take depending on whether the research is qualitative or quantitative.
Keywords: critical appraisal, evidence-based practice, research.
